Tim Dower: Are leaders' debates too focused on personality over politics?

I have wonder how much value there is in having this series of TV leaders' debates?

There's still one more encounter to come between the two main leaders, so counting the Stuff event last night, that makes four.

Do they help you make up your mind, have they changed your mind?

In the Herald this morning, all four of our commentators went for Jacinda Ardern as the winner in last night's event.

Audrey Young, Herald political editor, Jacinda Ardern barely put a foot wrong.

Simon Wilson, Herald senior writer, An easy win for Ardern.

Claire Trevett, Herald senior political writer, Judith Collins had a bad day on the hustings, and it showed.

Fran O'Sullivan, NZME head of business, Jacinda Ardern and Judith Collins bought their A games.

Do leaders debates make the election too much about personalities and not enough about policies?

I don't think we've quite got to the presidential style of election campaign you see in some countries, but it seems we're heading that way.

Is it the media's fault, do we focus too much on the person, and not enough on the policy package?

Or have we actually reached a point where our political scene has become quite presidential.

If that's so, then what we're voting for, or not voting for, is the party that's picked a leader we like, or don't like.

Does that serve us best, as a country?
