Kate Hawkesby: Why are we being told to avoid eating eggs?

The latest thing which is going to kill us all apparently, is eggs. I simply refuse to believe it personally.

Who comes up with this crap? Well in this case, Chinese researchers looking at Americans intake of eggs and the associated cholesterol. They were looking to see whether egg and cholesterol intakes contributed to mortality from cardiovascular disease. They found, according to one report  that, “eating just half a whole egg — which includes the yolk and the white — increases the likelihood of dying by seven per cent.”

How ridiculous. So the new killer is eggs. I’m sure it’s been eggs before, it’s certainly been fat and salt, but they’re back in for us now, sugar remains out, certain oils are out – seed oils, vegetable oils, big no-no’s. Olive oil – yes. It’s hard to keep up, and you can see why people get so confused as to what they should be putting in their mouths. If vegans are to be believed, certainly not meat. But whenever stuff gets cancelled, like meat, cheese, eggs, these researchers suggest we implement ‘substitutes’.

Substitute meat, flour, any substitute is just that – not the real thing. So I’m not sure why eating stuff manufactured to taste like the original, is any better for us, but there you go.

It does make me wonder how many of these studies are funded by or commissioned by these substitute food companies, whoever they may be. But I just know that not eating the real thing is usually (a) more expensive, and (b), usually tastes gross.

When one of our kids momentarily went through a “I’m a vegetarian now” phase, I bought vegetarian sausages.

They looked about as good as they tasted, revolting.

Look I’m not bagging healthy eating, I’m as obsessed with wellness and good food as much as the next guy these days, but I just keep coming back to the basics that everything in moderation is fine. Except trans fats maybe. But surely if we eat a balanced diet of wholegrains, fruits, veges, nuts and dare I say it – protein, as in meat, *ducks for cover from vegans*, then we should be fine?

I certainly won’t be giving up eggs. According to the Heart Foundation, “eggs are a nutritious whole food which are an inexpensive source of protein and contain other nutrients such as carotenoids, vitamin D, B12, selenium and choline.” Eggs actually increase our ‘good’ cholesterol. Funnily enough, scientists can’t agree on this new study claiming eggs will potentially kill 7 percent of us – they say the conclusions may be "overblown". No kidding.

So while they continue to argue over it, I’ll continue eating my eggs.
