Kate Hawkesby: Conspiracy theorists out in full force

Well yesterday was a busy day for the conspiracy theorists wasn't it?

We were inundated with correspondence, like I'm sure many other media outlets were, with all the fake news alerts circulating on Facebook, the alleged texts from a friend of a friend who knew all about what was "really" happening, the alleged close friends of Ashley Bloomfield who’d had the inside tip off that we’d be in level 4 lockdown by Monday.. there's a lot of fear and confusion out there.

Disappointingly there’s also a lot of repeat behaviour on stuff we’ve already been told last time not to do.

Panic buying at supermarkets for a start.

It’s scary how quickly our team of 5 million turns into a gigantic every-man-for-himself sprint to the toilet paper aisle.

When will we learn? None of that behaviour helps the people most affected here, the elderly, the immune compromised, the anxious.

And speaking of anxious, as if anxiety levels weren’t already high, I feel for all those extremely worried and upset by this, we were also contacted yesterday by scores of small business owners, many of whom had lost sleep over where to next for them, many of whom were already struggling. What we don’t need on top of a health crisis and an economic crisis is a mental health crisis as well.

That ship may well have already sailed of course, but it’s extremely uncertain when we return to living day by day in terms of what our future looks like.

Yesterday, on the morning of the day we went to Level 3 in Auckland, as I got up to get ready for work, I told you about the note my daughter had left for me.

‘Things I hate about Covid’ it was titled.

On that list, that grandparents day was cancelled due to school being shut, she was gutted because she’d been looking forward to seeing her grandparents.

It’s good if kids can journal or jot down their feelings during this time, it helps them get it out on paper and process it, it helps us as parents get a gauge on what’s worrying them most.

Hopefully this time our lockdown is short, but who knows, and it’s in the uncertainty that the anxiety can kick in.

Some have been able to adapt quickly, others are finding it really tough.

My daughter’s school have pivoted quickly to online learning so remote classes are back, boom, just like that.. just as we thought we had a long weekend looming. And we were busy sourcing masks yesterday too, trying to do all the right things and trying to stay positive.

And that does include maybe not tuning into a lot of the noise and conspiracy theories on social media.

No matter what we may think of what’s happening around us, the reality is, that if the bulk of us do the right thing, then the quicker we can hopefully get back to normal.
