Andrew Dickens: Terrorism is coward's warfare

So I woke up on Saturday morning to my partner telling me that three people were dead in Munich.

I didn't need that as the first words on my day off. So I told my partner to turn off the alerts on her news service. No wonder the world is so jumpy. We programme our phones to tell us every outrage as it happens and I'm sure it affects our spiritual well being.

Anyway after my eggs and coffee I looked at the story and went online. On my Facebook was a number of posts from my friends in Nice who are doing it tough after the Bastillle Day outrage. For them Munich was the last straw. The outrage that broke their backs. My timeline was full of lock em up comments. Here's a selection

“Our authorities have to get a grip and track down these evil bastards !!!”

“Our whole democratic and free way of life is under threat.”

“No pussyfooting! No excuses! Round up all the suspects and intern them until they can prove their innocence! That might sound drastic but otherwise it could be your child/mother/father/brother/sister/friend/neighbour.”.

“We have to fight fire with fire. They won't hesitate to kill us. The least we should be doing is rounding up suspects.”

They were all very careful not to name names but you know they were talking Islamists.

But as the weekend rolled on we discovered the teen killer was a keen student of mass killings. Born in Germany with Iranian parents he was bullied at school by Arabs and Turks. He Facebooked Arab and Turk schoolmates and told them to come to McDonald's for a surprise, which he delivered with a gun. He had a history of mental illness and psychiatric care. He did this on the anniversary of Anders Brevik's far right outrage 5 years ago in Norway which killed 77 people. This was no Islamic terrorist. This was a mad German who shouted 'bloody foreigners' as he killed Arabs and Turks.

So if we were to round up the suspects I guess we have to roundup all the mad people as well as the Muslims.

And here's the thing. Terrorism is coward's warfare and it seeks to destabilise and paralyse through fear. ISIS, currently our primary terror concern, has not been involved in either Nice or Munich but they'll take the fear generated by lone wolves gladly.

So in a climate of fear, if we advocate rounding up Muslims then it's a small step to rounding up the mad, all the Norwegian right wingers, and eventually anyone with a beef against anything whether they've done anything or not. And that's when the very thing we're fighting for, freedom, will be lost.
