Andrew Dickens: Some half-truths of the Trump presidency

Welcome to week two of the Donald Trump regime. A crucial question must be asked: Can he maintain the pace he set in the first seven days of his term as president?

Well, if you trust me as a member of the evil media to tell you some truths, then let me tell you some truths.

Firstly a popular conception is that President Trump launched a tsunami of executive orders like some out-of-control authoritarian. The quick answer to that is "no". So far President Trump has signed six executive orders. Eight years ago, President Obama powered through nine orders in ten days, the  sixteen orders in two months. Trump is hitting below Obama's strike rate. Trump isn't changing things like a megalomaniac.

Of course no-one should be surprised at the executive orders he's written as they were all signaled during the election. President Trump is doing the job he was elected to do, and said he would do.

Did President Trump throw out Obamacare? No. His executive order actually says that authorities need to seek ways to ease the financial burden of the Affordable Care Act. Obamacare isn't gone, it's just going to be changed to make it more competitive.

People also seem to think that an executive order is some sort of automatic law thrown down without debate. They're not. Mostly they're directives and they're able to be challenged.

The big story of the weekend was President Trump's immigration freezes for travelers from seven Muslim nations. It meant people in transit with valid visas were locked out of borders. It went to court and the interim ruling is that the executive order was unconstitutional and the travellers were let in. This shows that Trump is not a dictator. The constitution is still in charge.

Finally, I heard someone this past week calling the record strength of the Dow Jones and the relative strength of the FTSE as signs that President Trump's isolationism and Brexit's impact are not a problem.

This is such a lazy argument. The Dow Jones is at record levels mostly because 2016 has been the best year in the US economy since the Great Recession - an improvement under Obama's tenure of course. Trump has been in a week. The FTSE in Britain is doing fine because Brexit hasn't even started. Under Trump and Brexit the jury is still out. There's many more miles to go before we know which way is best and it's fair to say that there will be dark days and bright and the markets are not the final arbiter.

My point is this: The devil is in the detail. Detail is what politicians and corporates hate you looking at. That's what journalists are here to do. But if you no longer believe them, you better do the work yourself before you open your mouth and continue the half truths.
