Was Winston Peters 'deceived' by the President of Turkey?

Turkish officials are insisting it is safe for Kiwis to travel to Turkey for Anzac commemorations next month and have "categorically ruled out" any security threat against "our Anzac brothers and sisters".

This comes as diplomatic tensions between New Zealand and Turkey have been strained due to comments made by Turkey's Present Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan – who is just days out from an election – has played clips of the video the alleged Christchurch gunman made of his attack at rallies.

This is despite Foreign Minister Winston Peters saying he had been assured the footage would not be played.

University of Otago international relations professor, Robert Patman, told Kate Hawkesby Erdogan is playing the video to try and prove that he can protect Islam.

"He is trying to project himself as a popularist, nationalist who can best protect Islam both nationally and internationally."

He said the meeting between Tayyip Erdogan and Winston Peters clearly didn't achieve the desired result.

"The outcome has been unsatisfactory because Peters apparently received assurances before the meeting...there was no need to bring up the issue of explicitly asking the President of Turkey to no longer use this video because that had already been conceded, but apparently not because Mr Erdogan has continued using the edited video in campaigning."

He said it's put Winston Peters in a tricky situation.

"He may have been deceived, if you're a Foreign Minister...and you have been assured there is no need to bring this up because the issue has been dealt with, it would be a bit over the top if you did."
