A bit of light rain won't dampen anyone's parade at today's 158th Melbourne Cup.

New Zealand jockey James McDonald is riding the favourite at Flemington, Yucatan.

A couple of New Zealand-bred horses, Who Shot Thebarman and Zacada are outside bets.

Formpro race analyst Neil Davis told Kate Hawkesby the weather isn't likely to favour any particular horse.

"There is five to 120 millimetres forecast which won't affect the track too much, it's a very quick draining course and I can't see it really affecting any horses to a great extent."

He said if you're planning on placing a bet Yucatan is probably a fairly safe bet.

"I think Yucatan is the best of good things in the Melbourne Cup and he is paying $6. Not the kind of horse you would put your house on but  maybe your garden shed."
