A new report has laid out recommendations to lessen negative impacts, tourism may have on the environment.
he Parliamentary Commission for the Environment has released a report containing suggestions on how to reduce damage to the environment caused by tourism.
They include giving DOC extra powers, restrictions on freedom camping and a departure tax.
AUT Professor of tourism Micheal Lueck told Kate Hawkesby people will be willing to pay the tax to come here.
"People who are coming here flying long haul, they know that they are energy users in terms of tourism because of the long haul flight, and they are happy paying a few dollars more."
However, the report makes no suggestions relating to cruise ships, which Lueck says is an omission.Â
"That was big disappointment in this report.
"We know that the cruise industry struggles with a number of issues regarding the environment, regarding social impact."Â
