There is alarm at the acute shortage of gastroenterology specialists, which has been highlighted in a report by the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology.
Bowel Cancer New Zealand spokeswoman Mary Bradley told Kate Hawkesby says patients around the country who aren't being diagnosed early enough, which can be the difference between life and death.
"The fact the report highlights that 42 percent of their workforce will retire in the next 10 years is worrying. There is already a desperate situation where there aren't enough gastroenterology specialists to treat patients."
