An ambulance crisis in Sydney is being held up as a warning signal for shortages in the New Zealand healthcare system.

New South Wales had to rope in paramedic educators and senior graduates on Monday, after receiving 400 emergency calls in the space of two hours.

New Zealand Ambulance Association chair Mark Quin told Tim Dower sometimes an unwell person will call an ambulance if their GP is booked out for the next three weeks.

“We can intercede with those patients so that they don’t become duly unwell, but that takes time and some of these calls can tie up an ambulance for over an hour.”
