Investigations into how children are taken from their families by the state are multiplying rapidly.
Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier is embarking on an investigation into the Ministry's uplifting of newborns, under court order.
Te Kotahi Research Institute director Leonie Pihama says it's important for Maori children to be connected to their whanau and community.
She told Kate Hawkesby any system needs to be focussed on the care of children in a Maori way.
"The way in which the removals are happening and the existing system needs a significant change. Tinkering with legislation is not going to work."
