Otago University researchers hope a new discovery will help them treat the world's most deadly infectious disease.
Tuberculosis kills about 1.7 million people every year, with a growing number of people being diagnosed with drug-resistant forms of the disease.
Otago researchers have discovered how TB drugs starve TB viruses of energy.
Researcher Dr Kiel Hards told Tim Dower other medication may be able to perform a similar role.
"There's hints in a lecture that there's some similar effects in many, many other drugs like general drugs for other bacteria."
