A nationwide programme is set to roll out in schools to teach kids about money.

The Commission for Financial Capability is looking for schools to work with on a $10 million Government programme 'Sorted for Schools.'

Project leader Kelly Gay told Kate Hawkesby the earlier students understand money, the better prepared they will be in life.

"The reality is, our world's getting more complex, and it is something that needs to be taught, it can't just be taken in by osmosis."

Gay says their research reveals the majority of children want to learn more about finances within the school environment.

The initiative will have a particular focus on students at the NCEA level.

Gay says they're very concerned about the 16 to 24 year-old age group in New Zealand.

"That's an age group that gets into a bit of a debt hole quite quickly. The first time they get access to cheap credit they might be taking on cars and loans and that sort of thing, and it often takes them a long time to get out of that space."
