Teachers' strike - 'If it was just about pay we'd be really happy'

A primary school teacher says the strikes aren't just about pay with issues like workload and stress yet to be addressed by the Government.

Thousands of teachers are taking part in rolling nationwide strikes this week, as well as meetings to consider the Ministry's latest pay offer.

The offer includes a three per cent pay increase each year, over three years - plus an additional pay step and partial removal of a cap on qualifications for some teachers.

Auckland Gladstone Primary teacher Kahli Oliveira told Kate Hawkesby if it was just about remuneration, it would be a good deal.

"If it was just about the pay we would probably be really happy because it gives many of our teachers a good pay rise we are not disputing that whatsoever."

"It's just it does not address some of those key areas of requirement and retention and workload and teacher stress and all of the other things that we have been talking with the Ministry and the Government about for quite a long time."

However, she said teachers are hopeful that this saga will soon come to an end.

"I am optimistic, there are definitely signs of good faith on both sides."

The school parents and communities have been extremely supportive of the strike, Oliveira said.

"They know that we work really and need to be paid what we are worth. But also they see the workload and the stress and the time we need to teach them to lead and to learn."
