Airbnb spending $50m a year on payouts for bad experiences

So Airbnb, it sounds like a good idea, rent your home out while you're away, make a few dollars, it's a win-win for all.

It turns out that maybe it's more complicated than that.

Airbnb spend $50m each year in payouts to guests and hosts who've had bad experiences.

This can range from fixing damage to properties, counselling sessions and even hiring crews to patch bullet holes.

Which begs the question whether the whole process actually worth it?

Consumer NZ CEO Julie White told Kate Hawkesby the huge demand for services like Airbnb means there should be legislation in place to protect both guests and hosts.

“Perhaps that’s a question we should be asking ourselves ‘why isn’t it regulated?’ when we have the commercial accommodation sector regulated.”
