Bledisloe Cup match fails to deliver economic boost to Wellington

The return of international rugby hasn't quite delivered the economic boost many in Wellington were hoping for.

The first Bledisloe Cup match ended in a 16-all draw in Wellington yesterday.

Wellington Chamber of Commerce boss John Milford told Kate Hawkesby there were hopes the game would deliver an economic boost to the struggling hospitality industry.

But he says our closed borders somewhat prevented that.

"It's always a great event when we get the Bledisloe in Wellington. There was one missing ingredient though, and you know what that missing ingredient was? The Australians."

Milford says under normal circumstances, four to five thousand Aussie fans would travel here for such a game.

But for the Kiwi fans who attended - they were just happy to have international rugby back - and even the result didn't disappoint.

The second of four Bledisloe Cup tests is in Auckland on Sunday.
