Violent crime in dwellings, which is strongly correlated with family violence, has risen more than three per cent in the last quarter.

LISTEN ABOVE: Rachel Smalley talks to Shine executive director, Jane Drumm, about why this country has such high levels of domestic violence, and what we are doing about it.

The Government says it's down to higher levels of reporting and greater awareness of the issue.

Shine executive director Jane Drumm told Rachel Smalley it's due to a combination of two things.

She said people are more confident about coming forward, and are not prepared to put up with violence.

"If they don't do it themselves, they often find that their neighbours, or someone in the same house with them, will ring up and report to the police."

Drumm said the other thing is, violence has increased generally in society.
