Evidence of schools misusing public money have sparked calls for clearer spending guidelines.

The Auditor-General has highlighted a number of schools that have splashed out on expensive items, including gifts for principals, and a $7000 staff party.

PPTA President Jack Boyle told Nadine Higgins the overwhelming majority of schools make sound financial decisions.

"Ministry of Education are able to make ... sort of lower level interventions so when you get a bit of a flag then you get in there and sort of have a look at what's going on."

He said only 29 out of 2500 have been red flagged.

"It's important that all the schools in making their financial decisions have sufficient guidance so that one, the needs of the community are met and number two, that the decisions stack up."
