The heart of Hanmer Springs is going smokefree and vapefree this Valentine’s Day.

The popular tourist town is starting a six month smokefree trial tomorrow. 

The trial is a joint initiative by the Cancer Society, Canterbury District Health Board and the Hanmer Springs Community Board and is supported by the Hurunui District Council.

Hurunui District Councellor, Jason Fletcher told Kate Hawkesby they are hopeful the trial will be effective, although, he admitted it's hard to regulate.

Parks, playgrounds and reserves are already smokefree in Hanmer Springs.
