A motorsport legend says the latest case of a soft fine for super speeders is "Groundhog Day".Â
A high-profile Auckland property developer has been fined $1,000 dollars, for driving 175 kilometres an hour on a road outside of Timaru, with his wife and two kids in the back seat.
The man, Andrew Krukziener, lost his licence on the spot for 28 days.
He didn't suffer any other penalty because he was only charged with speeding, and not careless, dangerous or reckless driving.
Motorsport legend and road safety activist Greg Murphy told Tim Dower that this is just the latest case of someone being let off lightly.Â
"I would love to drive anywhere in New Zealand at 175 kilometres an hour, as if anyone's got the skills to be able to do it, maybe I do.
"But in New Zealand, we don't train people well enough to drive many places at 100 kilometres an hour."
Murphy says it doesn't matter what the road conditions were or what model of car it is - anything can happen in a split second.
He says that Police need to be given the power to increase the limit on fines they hand out. Â
