A domestic violence expert thinks the rise in police investigations into family harm, doesn't tell the whole picture.

Data released to the Mike Hosking Breakfast show police looked into almost 50,000 more domestic incidents last year, than 10 years ago - a 66 percent rise.

But fewer cases are going through court.

Prevention expert with organisation Shine, Graham Barnes, told Kate Hawkesby it is likely people are calling 111 more, rather than keeping quiet.

"It's difficult to interpret at this stage. More people are seeking help and I think that could well mean that people have got more confidence in the Police."

HOW TO GET HELP

If you're in danger NOW:

• Phone the police on 111 or ask neighbours of friends to ring for you • Run outside and head for where there are other people • Scream for help so that your neighbours can hear you • Take the children with you • Don't stop to get anything else • If you are being abused, remember it's not your fault. Violence is never okay
