Wellingtonians could find themselves six feet under, but only for a short time.
The Wellington City Council's considering renting grave sites - where people could be buried for a period of years before being exhumed and either relocated or cremated.
Funeral Directors' Association president Gary Taylor told Kate Hawkesby cemetery plots are becoming scarce in other parts of the country too.
"People may need to get used to travelling further to a cemetery, as they're often accessible within city limits."
Taylor doubts it will be implemented, at least how it's currently understood.
"It shouldn't be the only option available, but rather a choice."
