Regulation, not tech seen as biggest hurdle for electric flights

There are calls for more effort in reducing our carbon footprint, from the ground to the sky.

The Climate Change Commission final report recommends bringing in technologies in the transport space, including using electric planes for short haul flights from 2030. 

Electric Air Founder Gary Freedman operates the first and only electric plane in New Zealand.

He told Kate Hawkesby the technology isn't the thing holding us back.

“It’s more around regulation and getting these planes certified, which takes years. And rightly, before passengers want to get in a new type of aircraft they have to be rigorously tested and certified.”
