New research has shed light on the thousands of New Zealanders who are classed as the transient population.

The Auckland University of Technology study reveals 150,000 people are considered "vulnerable transient" - which means they've had to move three times or more in three years, to or within a deprived area.

AUT economist Professor Gail Pacheco told Kate Hawkesby frequent residential movement is known to have poorer outcomes.

"Generally have poor educational outcomes for children because they are having to switch schools multiple times. Poor health outcomes and in general. a range of negative outcomes."

Pacheco says these outcomes worsen if at least one of the moves has been involuntary.
