Parents are being urged to teach their children about body privacy and limits to combat pervasive porn culture.

Police in Hawke's Bay have revealed a worrying increase in pre-teens posting and sharing nude images.

In one case, an eight-year-old girl's parents were mortified upon discovering she'd posted pictures on YouTube.

Anti-pornography scholar Professor Gail Dines told Kate Hawkesby girls especially, need to understand sexting can upend their lives.

"When that image gets out, that girl's life is basically over in terms of her peer group. We just have so many cases of this, so it's never too early to teach your kids about privacy and about bodily integrity."

She says there's no question where it's coming from.

"When you just look at the selfies and you see the expressions the girl's pull, the so-called 'duck lips', you can see these are coming right out of porn culture."
