The government has expressed interest in creating a new Rural Health Commissioner role.
New Zealand's Rural Health Alliance group voted unanimously in favour of a new commissioner this week.
At its meeting on Wednesday, Health Minister David Clark indicated he'd explore the idea.
Rural Health Alliance Aotearoa council member Dr Chris Henry told Tim Dower a commissioner would deliver leadership, cohesion and accountability to the sector.
He says specific rural solutions are needed, like bringing in more rural doctors and midwives.
