The hunt is on for nine Sydneysiders who caught a taxi driven by a person infectious with coronavirus between September 8 and September 15.

Health authorities announced on Monday they had traced a “large number of people” who had ridden in the taxi, but had been unable to find passengers for nine trips in Sydney’s west and south west despite scouring booking logs, credit card transactions and trip data.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said these passengers had likely hailed the driver down as opposed to booking the trip, and suggested their payment method had not revealed their identity either.

NSW Health is seeking to identify passengers who caught the Silver Service taxi on the following times and locations.

These passengers should urgently call the NSW Health Call Centre on 9391 9000 for further advice.

All passengers who rode with the driver are considered close contacts and must immediately be tested for coronavirus and self isolate for 14 days, even if they return a negative result.

Dr Chant said NSW Health were working with the ride share and taxi industry to introduce a check in system that could see passengers required to scan a QR code when they get in a vehicle, which would make them easier to trace if something were to go wrong.

Health authorities advise those taking public transport or using a ride sharing vehicle wear a mask during their trip and sit diagonally behind the driver to ensure the maximum distance between people is created.
