Queensland mining unions are demanding urgent action, including a suspension of operations, after six deaths in as many months.
A 27-year-old died at a mine on Sunday, hours before a man in his 50s suffered a serious fall at another mine.
Queensland's Mines Minister Anthony Lynham has launched two reviews into the sector.
Australian correspondent Donna Demaio told Andrew Dickens unions want a much tougher response.
"They've actually called for a temporary shutdown of about 24 housd. They say they are sick of what's happening, its terrible, and there needs to be a major safety reset."
She says the mines minister will meet with unions and mine companies tomorrow.
"He says of course the loss of life in any workplace at any time is not acceptable. Families should be able to expect their loved ones can return safely."
