The Australian government is facing up to being a minority in Parliament, after a dramatic loss in the Wentworth by-election.
Independent Kerryn Phelps is still on track to win the seat left vacant by Malcolm Turnbull.
The high-profile doctor is sitting on 51 per cent of the two-candidate preferred vote, to Liberal candidate Dave Sharma.
Australian correspondent Donna Demaio told Tim Dower the result puts prime minister Scott Morrison in a very precarious political position.
"Will Scott Morrison call an election or will he just have to rely on the independence to get any laws passed?"
