A free speech advocate says the Government is walking a diplomatic tightrope with China the best way it can.

Jacinda Ardern and Winston Peters have raised concerns with Chinese officials over comments they made about Hong Kong protests at Auckland University.

Act leader David Seymour says Ardern and Peters haven't been as strident as they should have been.

But free speech advocate David Cumin told Kate Hawkesby the comments send a strong signal about freedom of speech being a fundamental right in New Zealand.

"We know the PM and other officials are having meetings in regards to standing up for freedom of speech, so good on them. This is a really important issue which many New Zealander's will be following."
