A centuries-old game has surged in popularity thanks to a hit television show, and forced lockdowns.
Netflix show The Queens Gambit has seen store shelves stripped of chess sets, as viewers take up the game.
Canterbury Chess Club secretary Craig Hall told Tim Dower lockdowns prompted an uptick in people playing chess, and then the show landed.
He says chess tournaments were held online during international lockdowns and the show has sparked the appetite of new players.
"Online guides have made the game less intimidating to new players, whose interest was sparked by the show.
