US Defence Secretary Mark Esper has reversed President Donald Trump's order to use the military as a means of stopping violent protests. throughout the United States.
Soldiers will remain in Washington, D.C. and Mr Esper said he does not support deployment of active military troops on city streets.
But US correspondent Cordelia Lynch says it does not mean the Insurrection act is not fully out of the window.
"What it does definitely signify us this divide and departure between the Defence Secretary and of course the President. He has clearly stated that it should only be used as you say as a last resort in the most dire of circumstances."
"This is something Donald Trump actively wants to pursue and has been actively looking at."
Ms Lynch adds there is now a clear divide between the President and Mr Esper.
