Efforts are underway to help regions build stronger trade relations with China.
Workshops are being held in Whanganui, Palmerston North and Dannevirke.
The New Zealand China Cross Border Electronic Commerce Foundation is one of two groups holding the workshops.
President Chris Lipscombe told Kate Hawkesby there are plenty of export opportunities outside the big cities.
"What we know, is that particularly through e-commerce channels, there's a huge interest in areas like skincare and cosmetics and health foods and supplements."
He said there are plenty of e-commerce opportunities in smaller towns.
"Things like tourism and education, people traditionally don't think of these things as e-commerce products but Chinese online consumers are buying them."
