Donald Trump isn't likely to tone down his inflammatory rhetoric after the Democrats flipped the House of Representatives.

The US president's Republican Party has lost its crucial majority in the House creating a roadblock for his immigration agenda.

However Republicans have increased their majority in the Senate with Trump conservatives achieving major wins.

Massey University's Cathy Strong told Kate Hawkesby Trump's rhetoric remains critical to his electoral success.

"It is his entire aggressive, call a spade a spade style that his type of supporters support and they continue to. His tweet really help him."

However she said he will need to be careful about making sure what he says is actually factual.

"He is going to have to tone it down a bit."

"Until now nobody has called him out in the House or the Senate when he says wrong things or really goes off course , nothing has come up to be discussed, they will now start bringing that up and he will have to defend himself."
