It's being suggested we're turning a corner in our drinking culture.
The research comes from alcohol lobby group, the Alcohol Beverages Council.
It suggests 74 percent of New Zealanders support tougher penalties for drunk and disorderly behaviour, and that more than 81 percent of the country now drink moderately and responsibly.
Executive Director Bridget MacDonald says the data sends a clear message.
"The majority of New Zealanders drink in a moderate and responsible way and it's time for those that don't to have a think about how they're behaving and how they're drinking and to make some changes."
