Farmers are preparing for what's looking to be an exceptionally dry winter.

NIWA says last month saw record-breaking dry conditions throughout the country.

Dunedin experienced its equal driest April on record, with only 23 per cent of its normal rainfall.

Central Otago economist Bill Kaye-Blake told Kate Hawkesby while there'll be anxiety among farmers; many recognise drought comes with the territory.

“Drought is part of farming, and we’re getting more information and better tools for coping with it. But yet, climate change is going to bring more drought with it so it is going to be more difficult.”
