Ministry for Primary Industries accused of being overcautious

There are growing calls for more common sense from the Ministry for Primary Industries.

It follows biosecurity concerns over fruit plants imported from a US facility which led to MPI quarantining 48,000 apple and stone fruit plants.

But the High Court has failed to see the merit in MPI's decision and has ordered the release of 20,000 apple plants and 400 stone fruit trees.

McGrath Industries owner Andy McGrath told Kate Hawkesby there is a fine line between protecting the country and being overcautious.

"They are a powerful organisation but it would be great if they had a bit more common sense."
