One-third of NCEA exams to be online from next year

Online examinations are about to make exam marking a whole lot easier.

From next year about a third of all NCEA exams will be online for text-based subjects.

And maths and science exams won't be far behind.

NZQA Deputy CEO of Digital Assessment Transformation Andrea Gray told Kate Hawkesby it will speed up the process.

"There are some elements that are much easier to mark [for example] if students hand writing is hard to read that goes away with digital examinations and the other thing is they are calculating the mark at the time so the marker has less administration to do."

She said it's important the systems can withstand technological glitches.

"At the moment students have the option to move to paper at any point in the process so that's part of the back up [and] of course, we have a lot of focus security while the students are doing the exam and afterwards."

But so far, she says it's worked well.

"This year we have had around 8000 students entered for digital exams which is about 60 per cent more than last year and 98 per cent of them thought it was an overall positive experience."
