Law Professor explains legal rights of Covid-19 border testing

It seems the law around Covid-19 testing at the border is not as straight-forward as we thought.

Airport pamphlets given to new arrivals heading into quarantine say the tests aren’t mandatory.

However, the Ministry of Health website still says arrivals must test negative after their 14 day quarantine.

Waikato University Law Professor Alexander Gillespie told Kate Hawkesby we're in a bit of a pickle because the law allows mandatory utilisation of testing.

"But at the same time, the Bill of Rights says certain people have the right to say no to certain things."

Gillespie says there's a bigger debate that's brewing, which also includes compulsory vaccinations when a vaccine comes.

"As soon as you go down this route, you're going to be opening up a can of worms."
