Domestic air travel across New Zealand is about to get a whole lot cheaper - but only if you're travelling away from the big cities.
Air New Zealand is due to announce it's slashing entry-level fares by up to 50 per cent on about 40 domestic routes.
Retail First Travel Group general manager John Willson told Kate Hawkesby the company's likely to focus on smaller routes, between regional areas.
"The main [lines] are pretty much tied up with Air New Zealand, they have got a good hold on that."
"It's definitely the smaller routes, they are focusing on those specific regional areas."
He said rival airlines like Jetstar will try to match the prices but it will be hard for them.
"It makes it very, very tough."
Wilson said while we might not see a spike in travel, it will help to get people travelling.
