A big maintenance bill stands in the way of keeping Christchurch's Wharenui Pool open.

It's likely the 110 year old pool will be decommissioned when the new Metro Sports Facility opens in 2022.

Wharenui Swim Club President Chris Averill told John McDonald they've been told by the council they have to go it alone.

He says they will do a feasibility study to see if it can be saved.

“If we simply can’t afford the money to stay, then we have to look at an option, because the last thing we want it to do is to take over a facility and then have a million dollars of maintenance to fix it up, it will ruin the club.”
