A political consultant says there are very few people who have yet to make up their minds when it comes to the US election.

LISTEN ABOVE: Stephanie Cutter, former deputy senior advisor to Barack Obama and Michelle Obama's former chief of staff, spoke to Rachel Smalley

The results will be known some time on Wednesday afternoon.

Stephanie Cutter is a former Deputy Senior Advisor to Barack Obama and former Chief of Staff to Michelle Obama.

She told Rachel Smalley the goal now is for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to make sure as many people in their voter base, are getting to the polls as possible.

"Which is way the early vote is so important in states like North Carolina, Nevada and Florida where we're seeing record number of Latino voters."

Ms Cutter said two thirds of voters in Nevada will have voted before election day, which she believes has walled off Trump's chances.

She said Hillary Clinton has an easy pathway to 270 electoral votes, which is what's needed to win the election.

"And the pathway for Donald Trump is very unclear which is why he's travelling to these states where he's been down, sort of a last shot."

Only 55 per cent of Hillary Clinton's vote is personal support for her.

Newstalk ZB political editor Barry Soper is in New York and told Rachel Smalley more than half of Donald Trump's vote is people who are voting for him, mainly to oppose Clinton.

"There's two candidates here that are extraordinarily unpopular and the votes are to block the other from getting in the White House."
