'You had one job': Hilarious spelling error made at historic pub

Queenslanders have given their full support to a newly built pub despite a hilarious and rather obvious spelling error made outside the venue.

After the Muckadilla pub burned down in August 2019, farmer Marty Coomber decided he wanted to rebuild it.

But instead of renaming it "The Macka Pub", builder Rob Pollock — who was in charge of putting the pub's name on the venue — switched the letters around to read "Bup".

Pollock admitted the incorrect spelling was deliberate and was his idea.

"It gets people talking hey, and I think it has done that," he told 7 News.

"A community without a pub is potentially not a community anymore."

Coomber said the spelling caused "a few laughs" and he considered leaving it as is because of the public attention.

"Could do at least until the pub opens, or we might even muck around a bit more later on, we'll see," he said.

The pub was originally built in 1912 but burned down in 1960, so a second pub was built to replace it.

The new "bup" is expected to begin operating by the end of August this year.

"This is by no means a guarantee, but we will give it our best shot," the pub wrote on its Facebook page.

"I promise to advertise the date as soon as we know to give as much notice as possible."

The pub has also warned accommodation facilities won't be ready in time for its expected opening but camping spots will be available.

The business took to social media, unveiling the new name with a caption that read: "Marty Coomber … you had 1 job".

Many people have since commented in favour of the change.

"What's the problem mate, when the pub shuts and the patrons walk out they will read it as PUB anyway lol," one person wrote.

"Unbelievably wonderful achievement. May the Bup and all that drink within it, prosper," another posted.

"Oh my twist this is looking SO GOOD. Keep the sign it gives it character," a third said.

"Don't correct it. It will become legendary and have even more people stopping," a fourth posted.

Muckadilla is a town located about 40km west of Roma in Queensland's Maranoa Region. It has a population of about 58 people.
