The Turkish president is continuing to show the video from last week's terror attack, despite a meeting with Foreign Minister Winston Peters.

New Zealand Police are trying to stop the spread of the video of the Christchurch shootings which claimed the lives of 50 and injured dozens more.

Peters met privately with President Tayyip Erdogan overnight in Istanbul and it's understood Erdogan assured the New Zealand government the video would not be used anymore.

But BBC Correspondent Mark Lowen says it's election time in Turkey and Erdogan is trying to steer attention away from a failing economy.

"He has whipped up this kind of frenzy of Turkey is under attack and I'm the only one who can protect you. It's a classic Erdogan trick."

Winston Peters spoke publicly in Istanbul, calling on for an end to Islamophobia and assuring Muslim leaders New Zealanders are a peaceful people.
