Robert Mugabe may be holding out for a better deal as he isn't expected to leave office quickly or quietly.

The Zimbabwean president is facing impeachment proceedings after he missed a deadline to resign.

However, the party may not have the numbers in Parliament to impeach the sitting president.

Correspondent Rashweat Mukundu said Mr Mugabe wants to leave on his own terms, but if proceedings are launched, they'll be fraught and long winded.

"He will be granted the right to reply, granted the right to interrogate the evidence against him, and would be granted the right to bring witnesses."

He told Mike Hosking that leaving on his own terms will include living out of the rest of his days in comfort, in Zimbabwe.

"If Mr. Mugabe goes, will receive a concession to stay in Zimbabwe and have his family economic interests protected."
