Australian researchers are calling for better education on contraception, with nearly one-third of unplanned pregnancies ending in abortion.

Researchers at La Trobe University spoke to 362 women who unintentionally became pregnant in the last 10 years.

Around half the women gave birth, 110 had abortions, and 55 had miscarriages.

Researcher, professor Angela Taft said the figures are concerning.

She said more needs to be done to reduce the number of unplanned and unwanted pregnancies, and both men and women need better information on contraception.
