The final results are in for the Fijian elections.

And while Frank Bainimarama's FijiFirst party has a clear majority, support has seriously slipped since the last general poll.

South Pacific journalist Michael Field told the Weekend Collective it's not news the incumbent leader wanted to hear.

"Whilst a win is a win, it's a devastating result for this particular party. The party lost nearly 30 per cent of its support, and Bainimarama's personal vote has dropped 25 per cent."

Field says that presents a fresh challenge for the leader.

"He will not be able to risk going to Parliament terribly often because Sitiveni Rabuka has done reasonably well, and the possibility of ganging up on Bainimarama in parliament is very evident."
