Police and Gatwick Airport officials believe the drone drama was an inside job.
The runway at the UK's second busiest airport was closed for 33 hours in the lead up to Christmas, because of drone sightings.
Around 140,000 passengers were affected by delayed, cancelled and diverted planes.
Gatwick chief operating officer Chris Woodroofe says the drone's pilot must have been able to see the runway.
He adds it's clear the person had a link to what was going on at the airport.
Sussex Police say the possibility an insider was involved is a credible line of inquiry.
