Greater Wellington Regional Council's flip flopping ideas this week has finished in a significant shift of power.

Chief Executive Greg Campbell has cleared his schedule for up to eight weeks to focus exclusively on the capital's transport woes.

It follows the decision to provide additional services on Karori routes.

It comes after the council said more buses would not solve capacity issues, and instead chose to remove seats.

City councillor Andy Foster says he supports the additional fast-tracked services.

"Things have been pretty clear they haven't had enough buses on. Buses have been too full, people have been left behind, so it was pretty obvious they had to add capacity to the route."

A 2IC will be appointed to look after things in Campbell's absence.

Councillor Barbara Donaldson says Campbell has a lot of mana.

"He has the ability to really talk to people at all levels and negotiate at the highest levels with the people he needs to."

City councillor Diane Calvert says she welcomes the chief executive stepping in and the additional services.

"I'm feeling a bit more comfortable they are now fully focused on the bus issues and getting those resolved effectively."
