A top Covid-19 expert is warning New Zealanders to brace themselves for coronavirus cases after a traveller from Australia visited Wellington while infectious.

Microbiologist Siouxsie Wiles, in a post to social media site Twitter, also advised people to wear a mask while out and about.

"Looks like we might need to brace ourselves for some #COVID19 cases after a travel bubble leak," Wiles said on Twitter.

"The sooner we identify people with the virus, the sooner we can break any chains of transmission, the less likely we will need to move up the alert levels if the virus has got into the community here. And remember, be kind to each other."

"A quick PS… I'd consider wearing a mask while out and about while we see whether this case has been infectious in NZ. In Sydney they've had transmission from people sharing the same air space in a mall so what have we got to lose?"

An Australian man infected with the Delta strain of Covid-19 spent two-and-a-half days in Wellington doing "tourist things" before returning home to Sydney and testing positive.
